I fancy myself an expert on child rearing cause none of my kids are in jail and they have all successfully made it to adulthood relatively unscathed. I get asked a lot of questions about rearing kids. Lets face facts no matter how many times your own mom tells you something about how to raise your kids sometimes it just sounds better coming from an expert (that would be me).
Here are some of my favvy's! Please email your questions and I will answer them here, if you want a little more privacy than let me know and I will email your answer back.
Does a baby 3-6 months old poop everyday?
Yes in most all cases a small baby will poop more than once a day. As long as there is at least one bowel movement than you know that baby is getting the nutrition that they need. If baby goes longer than 24 hours without a bowel movement than you will want to contact your pediatrician.
Should I have an Epidural?
I had 6 kids naturally. Is that right for everyone? Nope. My three girls that are moms all had an epidural. Two of them actually had to have emergency C-sections so their epidurals were for naught. Bottom line do what you can. If you can tough it out go ahead if you can't than don't. It is a personal choice!
What is the one item every mom should have for baby?
Besides a place to sleep I am going to go with a baby sling. Those things are really the bomb. Carrying baby around and being free to use your hands is really a valuable piece of equipment.
How do I know if my baby is getting enough to eat if I breast feed?
The only true tell tale sign that your baby is getting enough to eat is by weight gain. Your baby should gain 5-7 ounces per week! You are not alone if you are worrying about your baby getting enough from breast milk. Nine times out of ten baby is getting more than enough. Relax don't worry so much. Your body is designed to feed babies!
Can I spoil my child by picking them up and holding them?
The short answer is NO! Babies need to be reassured often that you are there for them. I do recommend trying this though instead of rushing to pick them up; speak to your baby using a soothing tone, saying things like 'you are ok' ' I am here' before you pick the baby up will train the baby to listen for those reassuring words before they get hysterical.. Babies need to be reassured that does not necessarily mean that you need to hold them constantly. It means you are in charge and if you are calm so will they!
How can I get my husband to help more?
I get this question a lot! We kind of shoo everyone away without even realizing it when we have a new baby. I see young mothers all the time take on soul responsibility for their babies care and they get annoyed when dad does not step up. Have the conversation but than step out of the way. Fathers play such an important role in child development, that it is very important that that relationship is fostered early on. Don't use your partner for heavy lifting purposes only, you know the ole grab the bags, carry the baby carrier and I will do all of the rest. Make him feel capable and let him know that you trust him while you take a nap!
